The history of Ohio is pretty interesting as we move from prehistoric times to American Revolution and from there to the Civil War and industrialization. Let us take a close look at the milestones of the history of Ohio.

In prehistoric times Mound Builders used to live in Ohio. Before the arrival of Europeans Ohio used to get recognized as the warfield of the the Iroquois and the Erie. Miami, Ottawa and Shawnee were the other significant tribes. It was from 1669, Ohio River started attracting fur traders and land seekers after the La Salle explorations. Ultimately the British won the game and France was defeated in the contest. But Ohio became a part of the United States of America after the American War of Independence in 1776. The next major landmark of the history of Ohio is the Civil War phase. Ohioans supported the cause of the Civil War and many of them joined the army to serve the purpose. Joshua R. Giddings, Edwin M. Stanton and Salmon P. Chase were the popular leaders who vehemently opposed the phenomenon of slavery. In 1863 Ohio was the center of the northernmost penetration of Confederate forces in the American Civil War. The raid of John Hunt Morgan was the most significant one. With the end of the Civil War, industrialization flourished in Ohio. There had been a considerable growth in the petroleum industry. And this led to the shifting of the center of economic activity from the banks of the Ohio River to the shores of Lake Erie. Cleveland became the industrial hub as far as the growth of petroleum industry is concerned. At this point of time Ohio became quite significant even politically. And it is from this state we has seven American Presidents.

Presently, Ohio is facing the flood problems and in 1913 the Miami Valley Conservation Project was set up to fight back the flood crisis. The 1929 Great Depression was a big jolt for both the farms and industries in Ohio. In 1970S and 80s Ohio went through a severe economic crisis due to the collapsing of steel, automobile and coal industries. The northern zone of Ohio suffered most. Now, Ohio is focusing on the growth of health care industry after the opening of the Cleveland Clinic.
