Historic Ohio Canals

Ohio is full of historic canals and let us take a close look at some of the most significant historic Ohio canals. The Hocking Canal used to be a small 19th century canal and the historic significance lies in the fact that it used to link Athens to Lancaster and Ohio to Erie Canal. This historic Ohio canal located in the southern part of Ohio but unfortunately it was destroyed by the flood and till date no program has been launched for the revival of the same. Miami and Erie Canal is another important historic canal of Ohio and it used to connect The Ohio River in Cincinnati with the Lake Erie. The peak of the canal was known as Loramie Summit. The Warren County Canal was an important branch of this historic canal in Ohio.

The Ohio and Erie Canal was constructed in the early phase of the 19th century and it used to connect the Ohio River at Portsmouth with the Lake Erie at Cleveland. This canal of Ohio has got immense historical significance as from 1862 to 1913 it served as the major source of water to the industries and towns of Ohio. But, the canal got destroyed by the massive flood attack of 1913. Historic Ohio Canals also include Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. This was actually a shipping canal which operated from 1840 to 1877 and it got destroyed in 1872. This canal used to serve both the states, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The Sandy and Beaver Canal should be mentioned when any discussion on historic Ohio canals is held because of its service to both Ohio and Pennsylvania. This was a 73 mile canal which extended from the Ohio and Erie Canal at Bolivar to Glasgow, Pennsylvania. The Wabash and Erie Canal was of great help to the traders as this shipping canal used to connect Great Lakes with all the possible ways to the Gulf of Mexico.
