Grand Lake St. Marys is a reservoir situated in the southeast region of Celina and in the west of St. Marys in the northwest portion of the Ohio. Grand Lake St. Marys extends over 13,500 acres in the Mercer and Auglaize counties. This lake in Ohio is the biggest inland lake in the state in relation to total area of land but is very shallow and has the average depth of 5 to 7 feet. Grand Lake St. Marys was built in the early years of the 19th century as an artificial lake for Erie and Miami Canal.

Oil is found in the area in the 1890s and the oil derricks were assembled in the lake. This area bordering Grand Lake St. Marys was made one of the foremost state parks in Ohio in the year 1949. The state park along with the lake is a popular tourist attraction which offers numerous choices indulging into recreational activities including camping, fishing, boating, hunting, picnicking and exploring the swimming beaches. Grand Lake St. Marys was once the biggest artificial lake in the world. The camping site has a wide number of exclusive amenities including air-conditioned Camper Cabins, showers and a deposit station. For boating, the boat rentals and the seasonal dock rentals are also obtainable.
The state wildlife refuge which is situated on the southwest bend is also reachable on boats from the lake. The name of Grand Lake St. Marys is just “Grand Lake” according to the Geological Survey of the US. But on the maps the name of the lake comes as “Grand Lake St. Marys” mostly for the address of the state park office – “St. Marys, OH”.
